In Reading, we’ll move on to our next story, Miss Bindergarten Takes A Field Trip With Kindergarten. In this story, Miss Bindergarten and her kindergarteners are stepping out of the classroom and going to all sorts of places. Franny gets to decorate a cake at the bakery, Jessie learns to Stop, Drop, and Roll at the fire station, Patricia gets to push the mail at the post office, and all of the kindergarteners read colorful picture books at the library! They even have time to play at the park and have a picnic. We will focus on the literary elements classify and categorize. In Phonics, we’ll learn to identify the letters Tt-Zz and continue to learn about initial sounds.
In Math, we’ll begin Topic 15: Position and Location of Shapes. We will learn positional words to describe the location of shapes.
In honor of Johnny Appleseed’s birthday, our theme next week will be Apples! We will be learning all about Johnny Appleseed and also doing lots of fun activities about apples. On Friday, we’ll cooperate to make applesauce!
Sight Words
Sight Words are assessed once a week. There are flash cards in your child’s folder that you should be using to review the words nightly. Most of the class is still on List 1. When a list is mastered I will put my initials under the list on the green sheet in your child’s folder and then they can start studying the next list. When your child moves on to a new list, continue to study the previous words along with the new list. There will be “review” tests given throughout the year to make sure students know all the words and not just the list that they are working on that week.
Accelerated Reading (Read Every Day Folders)
We have been trying to put a new decodable reader in our Read Every Day Folders once a week. If your child doesn’t have the folder in their back pack, the new book will be in their folder. If you fill all the spots on the monthly reading log, please let me know and I will give your child another sheet. September Reading Logs are due Friday, September 30th.
Homework
Starting next week, I may send home a worksheet for homework if I feel it’s necessary. Even if a worksheet is not sent home, students should still review sight words, read an AR book, and practice their DIBELS skills nightly.
DIBELS
DIBELS scores were sent home last week. If you have any questions please feel free to call or email me. Starting next week, I will send home monthly DIBELS practice sheets. Please review these skills nightly.
Mystery Reader
Next week, we’ll have our first “Mystery Reader!” Discuss the clues with your child and see if they can guess who it is!
1. It’s a girl.
2. She’s a teacher.
3. She has twins (a boy and a girl) that are almost 2 years old!
4. If we have a question about Computers, iPads, or Chromebooks we can ask her.
5. We visit her classroom on Days 4 and 9.
Fall Festival
The Kindergarten Fall Festival will be held on Thursday, October 6th. We are asking that each child please donate $3.00 for the Fall Festival. Please send it all donations by Friday, September 30th if you haven’t done so already! The next Fall Festival meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 27th at 6:30 at the Mineshaft in Ashland.
