May 4- 8, 2014

Next week, we’ll learn our very last letter!  Our new letter will be Qq.  There will be no Show and Tell next week.  On Monday, May 11th, students are formally invited to attend the wedding of Q and U! Invitations will follow! May 11th will also be the day that the girls have been waiting for all year, “Queen Day!” Girls are invited to wear their fanciest queen dress! Crowns will be provided!  Please continue to practice letters and sounds at home.

In Math, we will finish Topic 16.  Students are analyzing, comparing, and composing shapes.  Our big question is, “How can shapes be named, described, compared, and composed?”

Next week in Reading we’ll continue with Unit 3: Changes all around us!  The next story in Unit 3 will be Little Quack.  In this story five ducklings are hesitant to leave their cozy nest for the big pond. One by one, she manages to coax them into the water-first Widdle, next Waddle, then Piddle, and Puddle, but Little Quack can't be budged. After some convincing from his mother and his siblings, he dives in and-guess what- he loves it! We will be discussing doing new things. Students will learn about the literary element plot.  Our question of the week will be “What new things can you do as you get older?”

According to the positive behavior plan, in May, students must have ALL green lights in order to participate in the monthly reward.  This month the reward will be the Kindergarten Picnic!  Please continue to remind your child of this at home and encourage good behavior.

On Monday, May 4th, students from the high school’s Diversity Club will visit our classroom to teach a lesson on diversity and accepting differences.

This week we took the DIBELS test for the last time this year!!! I am beyond proud of how much growth everyone has shown since the beginning of the year!  Thank you to all of the parents who practiced with their children at home!!

The library will be hosting the Spring Book Fair, May 4th thru 8th. All students will have the opportunity to browse and shop during their scheduled library times (we will shop on Tuesday.)  All library books must be returned starting May 4th.  Books can be returned during the Book Fair but no books. ALL BOOKS MUST BE RETURNED NO LATER THAN MAY 11th.

There will NOT be a Reading Log sent home for the month of May.  Mrs. Manofsky will be picking the winners of the bikes on Friday, May 8th!!  Good luck to everyone who earned an entry!
