Kindergarten News October 4-8, 2010
~In the upcoming week, we will be learning “Tt” as in tent, tail, and tie. I am very proud of how well our class is doing with learning the letters and their sounds. They are doing a great job blending letters and reading short words! In Math we will be working more with graphing, shapes, sorting, and numbers. We will also start learning about AB patterns. In Reading we will begin the story Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten. We will be discussing people in communities. Students will be learning letter recognition and how to classify and categorize. Please review your “Family Time” when it comes home on Monday for more details.
~On Monday, October 4th, there will be a Fall Festival meeting after the PTO meeting. This meeting is for anyone who would like to help plan the Kindergarten Fall Festival.
~Please remember to send in a note with your child if they are absent. There were a lot of students absent this week and very few notes were sent in. The office needs these so that your child does not get an “unexcused” absence. Also, if possible, please call me in the morning (874-3661 ext. 3235) and let me know that your child is going to be absent so we can arrange for homework to be picked up or sent home with another student. We are starting to get deep in the Kindergarten curriculum and it’s very hard for students to catch up if they miss a day’s work.
~Book orders are due Friday, October 15th. You can send in your orders with a check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs or order online at www.Scholastic.com/bookclubs and use class activation code GM3BC.
~Students brought home their first Library book on Wednesday. These books need to come back to school on Wednesday for Library class and then they’ll get new books to bring home.
~Picture retakes will be Monday, October 18th. More information will be sent home.
~We will celebrate our school spirit and Homecoming with a pep rally on Friday, October 8th! Students will attend the pep rally in the gym at NSE on Friday at 9:30. Make sure your child shows their school spirit and wears RED and BLUE!!!!!
~Don’t forget to send in your child’s party money. Each child needs to bring in $6.00 and that will cover the cost for the Fall Festival, Halloween, and Christmas parties.

Kindergarten News September 27- October 1, 2010
We had an exciting week in Phonics this week, we read our first word! All of our students were so surprised that they can read all by themselves! In the upcoming week we will be learning the consonant “Hh” as in hat, hippo, and horse. As part of our study of the letter “H” we will have “Hat Day” on Friday, October 1, 2010. Students are asked to wear a favorite hat, a funny hat, or even a homemade hat. Please feel free to be creative with this!
In Math we will be learning about sorting, graphing and comparing objects. We will identify, describe, and compare circles and rectangles. We will also practice counting to 100 by 1’s.
In Reading we will start the story Platypus Lost. We will be talking about how families cooperate. We will learn the letters Pp, Qq, Rr, and Ss. Our amazing words will be: platypus, around, lost, found, market, groceries. Please look over the “Family Times” when it comes home on Monday. There are GREAT ideas to help your child practice the skills that we are learning in class.
We have been practicing writing our first names. Please watch your child as he/ she is writing their name. Be sure to check that letters start at the top and guide them to use the lines. Also, please be sure that they only use a capital letter for the FIRST letter of their name.
Anyone who would like to help with the Kindergarten Fall Festival is invited to a meeting on Monday, September 27th at 6:00 at the Dutch Kitchen in Frackville.
On Friday, October 1st we will be attending a special program to kick off the Olweus Anti-bullying program in our school.
Everybody did a GREAT job with the All About Me Posters! The students loved sharing them with the class and we loved learning more about them! Most of the class has come out of their “shell” and is making friends with each other. I was very happy to see that most of the class listed their classmates as their friends!!!
Thank you to all the parents that were practicing the computer numbers with their child. This has been a big help to Mr. Vebrosky and myself. We appreciate your help!
There has been some confusion with the specials schedule. We do NOT have Gym every Thursday. Our specials rotate on a 4 day cycle. Please see the schedule and calendar in your child’s folder if you have any question. The schedule for next week is:
Monday: Day 4 (Gym) Tuesday: Day 1 (Computers) Wednesday: Day 2 (Art)
Thursday: Day 3 (Music) Friday: Day 4 (Gym)
I am extremely PROUD of every child in our Kindergarten class! Our class has been getting lots of compliments from other teachers and staff members throughout the school. They are very impressed with the way that they follow school rules!

Kindergarten News September 20-24, 2010
Today we finished our week of learning the letter “O” with a visit from our school’s Occupational Therapist. Our class really enjoyed learning what an Occupational Therapist does! Next week in Phonics we will be learning the letter “Gg” and its sound as in goat, golf, and good.
In Reading we will start a new story, Fix It Duck. Watch for the Family Times to come home on Monday to see what we'll be learning for the week.
Anyone interested in helping with the Kindergarten Fall Festival is invited to a meeting in the NSE cafeteria at 2:00 on Monday September 20th. The Fall Festival will be held on Thursday October 14th (rain date will be October 15th.) The meeting MAY run until the end of the school day. Please send me a note or email if you would like to help but are unable to attend the meeting.
Next Friday, September 24th, we will be celebrating Johnny Appleseed’s birthday by doing a variety of apple activities. In order to complete our activities we are asking that each child bring in one apple by Thursday, September 23rd.
To access the homework helpline blog go to www.northschuylkill.net and choose elementary center, homework helpline, and then click Jamie Smith to view my page.
Please check your child’s folder daily and remove all “KEEP” items. It becomes difficult to handle the folders with too many papers inside (both for the students and teachers.)
Some students are having a very hard time cutting. Please save the coupons from the newspaper and have students practice cutting on the dotted line.
Just another reminder, Silly Bandz CANNOT be worn in our classroom. Too many students are taking them off and playing with them during class. Thank you!
Please continue to have your child practice buttons!
The school store is now open. Kindergarten students may shop on a Monday morning before they come to homeroom. School store is optional but students may shop any Monday morning for the entire school year.
Thank you for your cooperation and support!

Kindergarten News September 13-17
We have finished the 2nd week of Kindergarten and the students are adjusting very well! Last week we learned to recognize and write the letter “L.” The students really enjoyed the Luau on Friday! This week our letter will be “O” as in octopus. Show and tell for the letter “O” will be Thursday. Please practice the letters L and O at home.
We started Reading with the story, The Little School Bus last week. Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home with details about the story and skills we will be working on in Reading.
In Math we will continue to work with counting bears, pattern blocks, and linking cubes. Students should practice writing the numbers from 0-5 while singing the number writing verses on their practice pages.
This week we will begin a Science unit called Trees. We will observe and compare the trees around our school.
Last week, our class met their 4th grade reading buddies from Mr. Glessner’s class. Reading buddies will visit our class every Wednesday and read to our Kindergarten students.
Due to some problem in the past week, Silly Bandz are NOT allowed in our classroom. We consider them a toy since students have been playing with them instead of wearing them.
All about me posters will start coming home this week. This poster will help students to get to know each other better. Please complete this poster with your child and return it to school by the due date. Be creative when completing this project, use pictures, stickers, markers, etc.
Please be sure to encourage your child to write their name the proper way. Students should not write their name in all capitals. We understand that some students need practice writing it the correct way but the first step in helping is making sure we are consistent at home and at school.
Book orders are due Friday. This week is also the school book fair. Students will be able to buy books on THURSDAY. If you would like your child to purchase books at the book fair please send money in an envelope with your child’s name, my name, and Book Fair on it.
Please have your child practice buttoning and unbuttoning their pants. This was a BIG problem last week. Thank you!

First Week Notes...
**Our class had a TERRIFIC time at the pep rally. It’s great to see that they are proud to be Spartans!!!!

On Friday, September 10th Kindergarten will have a Luau! Students are asked to dress tropical: bright colors, floral prints, Hawaiian shirts, etc. More details will be sent home next week.

**Please discuss with your child if they are buying lunch and what they should choose. We’ve had a few children order lunch because it sounded good, but they really had a packed lunch!
**Try to make sure your child has his/her bus tag every day. The end of the day is hectic and some children don’t know their bus numbers yet!
**Every Friday of the school year is a spirit day! This is completely optional! It is done to promote school spirit and enthusiasm for our sports teams. The children are allowed to wear any North Schuylkill t-shirt and uniform pants or uniform shorts (please see p. 5 of the student dress code.)
