Kindergarten News: October 22-26

Next week in Phonics we’ll be learning about the letter N and the sound that it makes at the beginning of nest, nap, and nickel. Please continue to review all of the letters that we have learned (l, o, g, h, t, p, a) at home.

This week in Reading we read “Life in the Ocean.” This book explored the ocean habitat and taught us all about the animals and plants that live there. We discussed how this book was different from all of the other books we have read because it was non-fiction. We also learned that books that are make-believe are called fiction. Next week, we’ll read “Armadillo’s Orange.” We’ll focus on the story element setting.

In Math we will identify numbers and put them in order. Students will also be introduced to their first coin, the penny.

There has been a change in the lunch menu for next week. Please see the revised menu that is in your child’s folder today.

On Wednesday, we had a drug and alcohol presentation by Diane Rowland to help get us ready for Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week will be October 22-26. Students will participate in a coloring contest and are encouraged to dress for the following days:

Monday: Turn your Back on Drugs- Wear your shirt backwards
Tuesday: Sock it to Drugs- Wear crazy socks
Wednesday: Twin Day- Dress like them to help support them in making good choices
Thursday: Put a Cap on Drugs- Wear a hat
Friday: Team up Against Drugs- Wear a Spartan t-shirt

Picture retakes will be taken on November 5th. If you need re-take information please let me know.

On Friday, October 26th, NSE will participate in the American Diabetes Association Schoolwalk for Diabetes. Please be sure that your child has on sneakers and is dressed for the weather since we’ll be outside. Sponsor forms and money need to be returned by Oct. 26th.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and in an effort to promote awareness students are invited to wear pink every Thursday during the month of October! Please note that students are allowed to wear Spartan t-shirts, even though it’s not gym day, as long as they are pink!

PTO is selling pink bracelets at the school store for $2. The proceeds of this sale will benefit one of our NSE teachers who is battling breast cancer. If you would like to purchase bracelets please send the money in an envelope with your child’s name, the amount, and “bracelets.” Your support of this cause is greatly appreciated!

Wednesday, October 31st is the Halloween Parade. Students are invited to bring their costume to school in a bag marked with their name. They will change into their costume before the parade with the help of teachers and homeroom parents. Please keep in mind that we have 21 students to get dressed in a short amount of time so please keep the costumes simple (no spraying hair, full face makeup, etc.) Family and Friends are invited to come see our Halloween Parade at 2:00 on Wednesday. The parade will take place in the bus loop in front of the school.
