Kindergarten News: October 1-5

Next week in Phonics, we will begin the letter “Pp” as in pig, pancake, and popcorn! On Friday, October 12th we will have a Pajama party to celebrate the letter “Pp.” Kindergarten students are invited to wear their pajamas to school but please, NO slippers! Students will participate in several activities to reinforce the letter “Pp.”

This week in Reading we read Julius. This book is about a little girl named Maya's whose Granddaddy brings home a huge, pink, Alaskan pig named Julius! Whether Julius is sporting white underwear with hearts, joyfully swinging Maya around to a jazz tune, or unhappily submitting to a bath, his love for his friend shines as brightly as his glossy pink skin. Next we’ll read the story Dig, Dig, Digging. Our class will discuss how machines help people. We will continue to discuss classifying and categorizing.

In Math we will discuss and compare triangles and squares. We will also practice AB patterns and sorting.

On Friday, October 5th, Elementary students will celebrate Homecoming with a Pep Rally! Students are invited to wear red and blue to show their school spirit. The Spartans will take on the Tamaqua Blue Raiders at 7:00 pm in Spartan Stadium on Friday! Also, the Spartan Football team, Cheerleaders and Halftime Club will recognize October as Breast Cancer Awareness month during the game. The Spartans will be hosting a fundraiser to benefit a very special woman so please try to come out and support a great cause!

Our theme for the upcoming weeks will be Fire Safety. There are many activities planned to teach the students about fire safety. We’ll even get to see a real fire truck on Thursday morning! Don’t forget to ask your child what he/she has learned!

Thank you to all of the parents that sent in an apple for our projects this week. Please be sure to ask your child about all the fun apple activities we did to celebrate the birthday of Johnny Appleseed!

Thursday, October 4th, there will be a meeting for any parents or grandparents interested in helping at the Fall Festival. The meeting will be held at the pavilion behind North Schuylkill Elementary at 6:00. If it’s raining the meeting will be held in Miss Smith’s classroom (please enter through the playground door.)

As the weather starts to get cooler please send your child to school with a coat. We go outside for recess everyday (unless it’s raining) and some students have been complaining that they are cold on cooler days. Also, please write your child’s name in their coat. Many Kindergarten students are having a hard time keeping track of their coats.

The School Store is now open. Kindergarteners may only shop on Mondays. Students do NOT come to the classroom before shopping so it’s important that you explain to your child where their money is and that they need to stop before coming to our room.

There are still a few students who do not know their 4 digit ID number. It is very hard to go through the lunch line, log on the computers, and check books out of the Library when they don’t know their numbers. The number is on the front of their folder under their name.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and in an effort to promote awareness students are invited to wear pink every Thursday during the month of October! Please note that students are allowed to wear Spartan t-shirts, even though it’s not gym day, as long as they are pink!

There is no school for students on Monday, October 8th!

Specials Schedule:
Monday: Library (Don’t forget to bring your book!) Tuesday: Computers
Wednesday: Art Thursday: Music
Friday: Gym (Don’t forget sneakers!)
