Kindergarten News: April 11-15

Next week in Reading we will continue with Unit 5, Going Places. We will be reading the story Messenger! Messenger! and discussing different forms of emergency transportation. Students will review the vowel Uu. We will also discuss comparing and contrasting.

In Phonics we will be learning about the digraphs ck and sh like in duck and shark. A digraph is 2 letters that come together to make one new sound. We code digraphs by underlining them. I will no longer be sending home word lists. I will be assessing students’ on their ability to decode and blend the words using their phonics skills with no practice.

In math, we will continue working with Tangrams and money. Students will also learn about a new shape, a sphere. Please continue to practice identification of pennies, nickels, and dimes at home, a lot of students are struggling with this concept.

The menu for Monday April 11 2011 will be breaded chicken patty on a roll, not breaded chicken nuggets.

This afternoon we had a very special program. Our students raised $2000 for the SPCA and we presented them with a check. Students and staff were treated to a donut from the Plain and Fancy donut shop as a thank you. We also got to be part of a recording of a very special message to Ty Pennington and Extreme Home Makeover asking them to come and rebuild the animal shelter! Be sure to watch WNEP, WBRE, and the Pottsville Republican for coverage of the event!
