Kindergarten News January 10-13, 2010

Reminder: There is no school for students Friday, January 14th and Monday January 17th.

Next week in Reading we will continue with Unit 3, Watch Me Change and read the story Little Quack. We will be discussing doing new things. Students will learn about the consonant R and the literary element plot.

In Phonics we will be learning the consonant “Bb” as in balloon, baby, and bear. Word List 8 is coming home today and will be tested Thursday, January 13th. Please note that this word list will be tested on Thursday due to the long weekend.

In math, we will continue to work with Geoboards and counting by 10’s. Kindergarteners will also be introduced to the dime.

We began our new Science unit called Wood and Paper. This week we became familiar with different kinds of wood, we learned their names, and observed how they are alike and different, went on a wood hunt in our classroom, and observed how wood and water interact. Next week we will add the students knowledge of the properties of wood and learn how to use those properties to change wood. We will use sandpaper, simulate the making of particleboard and make plywood from thin strips of wood and glue

Book orders are due Thursday, January 13th. The paper that came home with the book orders said January 14th but since we don’t have school they will be due January 13th!

We have been trying to take Kindergarten students outside for recess whenever we can. Please make sure that your child is dressed properly. Also, if your child has lost any coats, lunch boxes, gloves, hats, etc in school since the beginning of the year PLEASE let me know. There is no way that I can keep track of 23 Kindergarten students’ belongings so when something goes missing I usually don’t know unless somebody lets me know. There are 2 LARGE boxes of items in our lost found from the beginning of the year and I would love to return things to their owners!

We will be working on assessments for the 2nd marking period report cards over the next couple weeks. Report Cards will be sent home on Friday, January 21st (unless we have a snow day ;)

I’m sure that your child has told you but we have some new students in our classroom. We are thrilled to have these students join our class! There are a lot of birthdays coming up and I know I told some parents before Christmas that we have 19 but we currently have 23 students in our classroom.
