There is NO SCHOOL for students on Friday, February 17^th and Monday, February 20^th.

Next week in Reading we will continue Unit 4 Let’s Explore. We will be reading the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will continue to discuss adventures. Students will review the literary element, character.In Phonics we will be learning about the consonant “Yy” as in yak, yo-yo, and yellow. Word List 12 will come home today but will not be tested until Friday, February 24^th.

Our Valentine’s Day party will be held on Tuesday, February 14^th from 11:30-1:00. We will be having a snack, playing a game, and making a craft. Students are also invited to share valentines with their classmates. Feel free to send them to school any day next week.

The Coupons for Troops program is over. We would like to thank all the families that participated.

Next week in Reading we will continue Unit 4 Let’s Explore. We will be reading the story One Little Mouse. We will continue to discuss adventures. Students will also learn about consonant blends and sequence. In Phonics we will be learning about the short sound of the vowel “Ee” as in egg, elephant, and excellent. Word List 11 will come home today and be tested Friday, February 10th. In math we’ll work with Geoboards again. We’ll also learn more about measuring, patterns, and some, some went away story problems.

Tuesday was the 100^th day of school, can you believe it? Make sure you ask your child about all the fun “100” activities that we did.

Last week’s newsletter had a class list for Valentine’s. If you misplaced the list please let me know so I can send another one. Also, we have a new student in our class so please add him to your list for Valentines. His name is Kareem.

February 7-11 is bully prevention week. Here is the schedule for the week:

K or C Rule

This week we will be learning the letter Cc and it's sound as in cat, cap, and car. We will also learn the K and C Spelling Rule. The rule explains that we spell the /k/ sound with the letter k when the sound is followed by the letters e, i, and y. We spell the /k/ sound with the letter c when the sound is followed by a, o, u and any consonant.

Word List 10 will come home today and will be tested Friday, February 3^rd. In Math, we will continue to learn about the dime, measuring, and pictographs.

We have been trying to take Kindergarten students outside for recess whenever we can. Please make sure that your child is dressed properly.

The 100th day of Kindergarten is approaching fast! Kindergarteners will be celebrating the 100th day on Tuesday, January 31^st (unless we have a snow day before then.) Students are invited to dress like they are 100 years old, bring in a special collection of 100 items to help celebrate the special day, and complete the 100^th day questionnaire.

Hip, Hip, Hooray for the 100th Day!

On Tuesday, January 31st we will be celebrating your child’s 100^th day in Kindergarten! Can you believe it? The time has really gone fast! We are planning a very special day with lots of “100” activities and we’ll need your help!

Please complete the 100th Day questionnaire with your child. You can help them with spelling but try to have them do most of the writing. We will share our 100^th day questionnaires on the 100^th day of school, so please be sure to return it before then!!!

On the 100^th day of school Kindergarten students are invited to dress as if he/she is 100 years old. Since students need to appear quite a bit older you may want to use props such as canes, walkers, glasses, old fashioned jewelry, wigs, baby powder, etc. Don’t be afraid to use your imagination!

The final item that we’ll need is a collection of 100 small items. These may include noodles, paperclips, m&ms, pennies, markers, pretzels, etc. Your child can put them in the bag provided or you can come up with another idea. We will display these collections on the bulletin board outside of our classroom but we’ll return them after we are done with them.

Next week in Reading we will finish Unit 3, and read the story Hide Clyde! We will be discussing changing for protection. Students will learn about main idea. In Phonics we will be learning the short sound of the vowel “Uu” as in umbrella, uncle, and under. Since “U” words can be hard to find we will skip Show and Tell and do United States reports instead. Please see the note in your child’s folder today for more information. Due to the 2 hour delay we did not have time to test Word List 8. It will be tested on Friday, January 20. Please continue to review Word List 8 at home. In Math, we will continue to learn about the numbers 0-20. We will continue learning about wood next week in Science. Students will become familiar with different kinds of wood, learn their names, and observe how they are alike and different.

Kindergarten News: January 9-13

Next week in Reading we will continue with Unit 3, and read the story Seeds. We will be discussing how plants grow and change. Students will learn about drawing conclusions and will also discuss fiction and non-fiction. In Phonics we will be learning the consonant “Bb” as in balloon, baby, and bear. Word List 8 is coming home today and will be tested Friday, January 13^th. In math, we will start a few new concepts: Sharing a whole by separating it into two equal parts; solving a problem by guessing and checking; and comparing sets of objects and numbers; and weighing using nonstandard units. In Science we will begin a new unit called Wood and Paper. We will become familiar with different kinds of wood, learn their names, and observe how they are alike and different. We will go on a wood hunt in our classroom, and observe how wood and water interact. We will use sandpaper to simulate the making of particleboard and finally make plywood from thin strips of wood and glue.

On Thursday or Friday we’ll be taking the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) test.

Book orders are due Friday, January 13^th.

Next week in Reading we will finish our story from last week, See How We Grow. We will continue to discuss how children change as they grow. We will also talk more about cause and effect. In Phonics we will also finish learning about the consonant “Rr” as in rabbit, rat, and reindeer! Word List 7 will come home after the holidays. In Math we’ll practice counting by 10s and estimating. We’ll also introduce the dime.

There will be NO homework next week! Merry Christmas!

Santa visited our classroom this week and gave every student a candy cane! He told the students he would leave a special present in our classroom for them and to our great surprise there was a present under our class Christmas tree this morning! After reading the directions on the top we opened the present and found a letter from Santa for each student! The letters are coming home in folders today to be read at home ;)

Thank you to all of the parents that attended the K-2 Christmas Concert on Monday. Our students were so excited to see so many people there to cheer them on! A big congratulations to all of our students for singing their hearts out!

Wednesday, December 21^st we will travel to the high school to see the NSHS Band and Chorus perform their Christmas concert.

On December 22nd, we will be celebrating the story the “The Polar Express.” Kindergarten students are invited to dress like the characters of the story by wearing their pajamas to school. We will have hot chocolate, cookies, make crafts, and read the book “The Polar Express” by Chris Van Allsburg.

Next week in Reading we will continue with Unit 3, and read the story See How We Grow. We will be discussing children changing as they grow. Students will learn about cause and effect. In Phonics we will be learning the consonant “Rr” as in rabbit, rat, and reindeer! Word List 6 is coming home today and will be tested on Friday, December 16^th. This will be our last Word List until after Christmas. In Math we’ll learn a new shape called a cube and also practice more with Geoboards.

Our local postman (Eric Hughes) and one of Santa’s elves (Danielle Laurusevage) visited our classroom to collect our letters to Santa today! Each student was given a special seal to make sure that the letters make it to the North Pole! ***Please watch your child’s folder for a letter FROM Santa next week!

Family and Friends are invited to attend the K-2 Christmas Concert which will be held Monday, December 12^th at 9:30 in the North Schuylkill High School Auditorium. School dress code or nicer may be worn but NO spirit or gym cloths!

Please be sure to review your Family Times when it comes home on Monday. There are LOTS of great activities for you to do with your child! In Phonics we will be learning the consonant “Ff” as in fish, flower, and fun! Everybody is really trying their best on the word lists and we are proud of the progress that they are making! Word List 5 is coming home today and will be tested on Friday, December 9^th. In Math, we will continue to learn about patterns, sorting, graphing, and ordinal numbers.

School Store is CLOSED until January due to Santa’s Workshop.

Family and Friends are invited to attend the Christmas Concert which will be held Monday, December 12^th at 9:30 in the North Schuylkill High School Auditorium. Letters to Santa are due Monday, December 5^th!

Students will be dismissed at 11:45 on Wednesday, November 23^rd! School will be closed Thursday, November 24^th until Monday, November 28^th for Thanksgiving vacation! We hope everyone has a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving! Enjoy the time off with your child!

There will be NO HOMEWORK this week! Enjoy!

Due to the short week, we will not begin a new letter in Phonics. After Thanksgiving, we will learn the letter S as in smile, sun, and snake. Word List 4 will come home on Wednesday, November 23^rd and will be tested on Friday, December 2^nd. In Reading, we will begin Unit 3, Watch Me Change, and read the story Little Panda. This story will be finished the week after Thanksgiving. We will discuss comparing and contrasting. Students will also get a chance to watch a “Panda Cam” at the National Zoo in Washington DC. In the upcoming weeks we will compare objects by weight, practice patterns, and start using geoboards in Math.

Next week we will continue to talk about Thanksgiving and complete lots of fun activities! On Monday we will make Native American necklaces and vests. On Tuesday we will celebrate Thanksgiving with our 4^th grade reading buddies! Students will have a snack and watch the movie “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.” Finally on Wednesday, we will make butter and cornbread!

Thank you to everybody who sent in a non perishable item for the Feed A Friend Project. The class was very excited about the idea of helping somebody in need.

On Tuesday, November 29^th, a letter to Santa will be coming home for you to complete with your child. Please return this letter by Monday, December 5^th. On Friday, December 9^th a postman will pick up the letters at school and take them directly to Santa at the North Pole!

Next week we will finish the unit “Animals Live Here” and read the story Whose Garden Is It? We will be discussing gardens. Students will learn about realism, fantasy and the vowel I. Please be sure to review your Family Times when it comes home on Monday. In Phonics will we will be studying the short vowel sound of “Ii” as in igloo, iguana, and ill. Students continue to do a GREAT job on the word lists! I can tell that they are practicing at home! Please practice Phonics Word List3 next week and the beginning of the following week. Due to the short week and the holiday, it will be tested Tuesday, November 22^nd. In math, we will work with money. Students will practice writing money amounts and also ordering amounts of money up to 10 cents.

Thanksgiving vacation begins on Wednesday November 23^rd!!! Students will be dismissed at 11:45 that day. There is no school for students November 24^th-28^th.

The North Schuylkill Jr. Sr. Student Council is sponsoring the Feed A Friend project to help less fortunate families in Schuylkill County have an enjoyable Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. In an effort to help those that are in need, I’m asking that each student bring in one non perishable item to donate to the Feed A Friend project.

On Monday, we had our monthly Guidance Lesson. This month we welcomed Mrs. Clarissa Geary into our classroom to talk about Personal Body Safety. Please be sure to ask your child what they learned from Mrs. Geary.

Next week in Reading we will we continue our unit “Animals Live Here” and read the story “A Bed for the Winter.” We will be discussing winter homes. Students will learn about sequencing. We will be adding 2 new sights words (he, for) so please be sure that your child’s sight word flash cards are in their folder or we’ll put them in the sleeve of their folder. Please be sure to review your Family Times when it comes home on Monday. There are LOTS of great activities for you to do with your child! In Phonics we’ll learn about the letter Mm as in monkey, money, and movie! Word List #2 is coming home today. Please continue to practice the word lists at home! We are very proud of how hard some of the students studied the first list! Students will continue to practice number identification and ordinal positions in Math. We will also introduce time. Students will practice telling time to the nearest hour.

Report cards are in your child’s folders today. Please sign and return them as soon as possible!

Friday, November 11^th is an Act 80 Day. There is NO SCHOOL for students!

We were able to Skype with our computer teacher Miss Kraft in Africa again this week! Please ask your child about this fun learning opportunity! Miss Kraft just finished a safari when we talked to her so we got hear about all the animals that she saw!

Since the weather is getting cooler, please have your child practice putting their coats on themselves and zipping/ buttoning them.

Please remember that we change the clocks this weekend so shorts may NOT be worn to school starting Monday. Thank you!

Next week in Reading we will continue our new unit, “Animals Live Here” with the story, Bear Snores On. We will discuss reality and fantasy. In Phonics, we’ll learn the letter Nn as in nest, nap, and necklace. Please practice the Phonics word list that is coming home today with your child. It will be tested next Friday, November 4th. Students will be introduced to the penny in Math. We will also continue to work with shapes and numbers 0-10.

A big thank you to the parents who came in to help at the Halloween Party and Parade! We would also like to thank all the parents that sent in Halloween treats for the class. Finally we would like to thank you all the parents who came to watch the Halloween Parade. Our students were so excited to see so many people who they knew!

Reminders: Friday is the Halloween Party! Students need to bring their costume to school in a bag labeled with their name. Students will get dressed at 1:45 with the help of teachers and homeroom helpers. The parade will begin at 2:15 in the bus loop in front of the school. Next week in Reading we will continue the unit, “Animals Live Here.” We are going to be reading the story Animal Babies in Grasslands and will talk about grassland animals. We will focus on the story element main idea. There will also be 3 new sight words next week (we, my, like.) Please send in your child’s sight word flash cards so we can add the new words. If their flash cards are not in their folder we will put the new cards the sleeve of their folder. We will begin testing for report cards next week so we will not start a new letter in Phonics. In Math we will identify numbers and put them in order. Students will also be introduced to their first coin, the penny.

Kindergarten students had a fantastic time at the Fall Festival on Thursday. A HUGE thank you to all of the volunteers who made this day so great for the kids!

Kindergarteners also did a great job this morning at the School Walk for Diabetes for Make a Difference Day at Spartan Stadium.

On Monday we had a program on drugs and alcohol with Diane Rowland. The class was on their best behavior and now they understand what Red Ribbon Week is all about! Next week we will celebrate Red Ribbon Week. Please see the pink paper that is in your child’s folder today for more information.

Friday, October 29^th is the Halloween Party and Parade. Students are invited to bring their costume to school in a bag marked with their name. They will change into their costume before the parade with the help of teachers and homeroom parents. Please keep in mind that we have 25 students to get dressed in a short amount of time so please keep the costumes simple (no spraying hair, full face makeup, etc.) Family and Friends are invited to come see our Halloween Parade at 2:15 on Friday. The parade will take place in the bus loop in front of the school.

We had a fantastic time at our Pajama party today! The class got to participate in lots of “Pp” activities. It was definitely a PERFECT day! Next week we will be learning about the letter “Aa” as in apple, alligator, and astronaut.Next week in reading we will continue our new unit, “Animals Live Here” with the story “Armadillo’s Orange.” We will discuss the setting of the story. In Math we will practice ordering numbers and also learn ordinal positions up to fourth.

Don’t forget…Friday, October 21st is a half day for students! Students are dismissed at 11:45.

Thursday, October 20^th is the Kindergarten Fall Festival. Students are allowed to dress in “gym clothes” even if they don’t have Gym on Thursday.

On Friday, October 21st we will be participating in the School Walk for Diabetes for Make a Difference Day at Spartan Stadium.

On Monday we will have a drug and alcohol presentation by Diane Rowland to help get us ready for Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week will be October 24-28.

Next week in reading we will begin Unit 2, “Animals Live Here.” The first story we will read is “Life in an Ocean.” We will discuss ocean environments. We will talk about the vowel “Aa” along with comparing and contrasting. Students will learn 2 new sight words: have, is. Please be sure that your child’s sight word flash cards are in their folder next week so we can add these new words. In phonics we will begin the letter “Pp” as in pig, pancake, and popcorn. On Friday, October 14th we will have a Pajama party to celebrate the letter “Pp.” Students are invited to wear their pajamas to school on Friday. Please, NO slippers! Students will participate in several activities to reinforce the letter “Pp.” In math we will discuss and compare triangles and squares. We will also practice AB patterns and sorting.

Monday, October 10th will be a school day for students! We will be making up the day we missed due to the flood. Monday’s lunch will be a hamburger or meatball hoagie.

The Kindergarten Fall Festival will be on Thursday, October 20th (NO RAINDATE.) Please send in your child’s Fall Festival money ($3) if you haven’t done so already. There will be a meeting for anyone interested in helping with the Fall Festival on Wednesday October 12th at the Mineshaft in Ashland.

Please remember that Kindergarten students may only shop at the school store on MONDAY morning before they come to class.

Our theme for the upcoming weeks will be Fire Safety. There are many activities planned to teach the students about fire safety. Don’t forget to ask your child what he/she has learned!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and in an effort to promote awareness students are invited to wear pink every Thursday during the month of October!

In phonics next week, we will be learning “Tt” as in tent, tail, and tie. We are very proud of how well our class is doing with learning the letters and their sounds. They are doing a great job blending letters and reading short words! In reading we will read the story Dig, Dig, Digging. We will discuss how machines help people. We will also focus on classifying and categorizing. In math students will practice acting out story problems and identifying ordinal positions to fourth. We also begin talking about sequence and review number identification.

Wednesday, October 5^th at 6 pm there will be a meeting for anyone interested in helping with the Kindergarten Fall Festival. The meeting will be held at the Mineshaft in Ashland.

Thank you to all of the parents that sent in apple for our projects this week. Please be sure to ask your child about all the fun apple activities we did to celebrate the birthday of Johnny Appleseed!

The class had a FANTASTIC time at the pep rally today. They showed that they are full of SPARTAN spirit! Good luck tonight to the Spartans vs. the Hurricanes!

We had an exciting week in Phonics this week… we read our first word! All of our students were so surprised that they can read all by themselves! In the upcoming week we will be learning the consonant “Hh” as in hat, hippo, and horse. We will have “Hat Day” on Friday, September 30th. Students are asked to wear a favorite hat, a funny hat, or even a homemade hat. Please feel free to be creative with this!

In Math we will identify, describe, and compare circles and rectangles. Students will also continue to practice numbers and will even count to 100 by 1’s.

In Reading, we will begin the story Julius. Our class will discuss how people and animals work and play together. We will continue to discuss characters, settings, sequence, and classifying. There will be 2 new sight words: a, to. We will also talk about the letter Mm and the sound it makes.

Everybody did a GREAT job with the All About Me posters! If your child didn’t bring theirs in yet please send it in next week. Every student really loved sharing them and we all loved learning about our classmates! Most of the class has come out of their “shell” and is making friends with each other. We were very happy to see that most of the class listed their classmates as their friends!!!

Students brought home their first Library book on Tuesday. These books need to come back to school on Day 5B (Tuesday) for Library class and then they’ll get new books to bring home.

Next week, we will be celebrating the birthday of Johnny Appleseed. We will be working on apple activities all week. In order to complete some of the projects we are asking that each child bring in ONE APPLE! The apple can be any color and size. On Friday we will use all the apples to make applesauce!

The Kindergarten Fall Festival will be held on Thursday, October 20^th, 2011. Each student is asked to bring in $3 to help pay for supplies for the day. Please send the money in an envelope with your child’s name, teacher, and FALL FESTIVAL labeled on it. Thank you!

Kindergarten News: September 19-23, 2011

Today we finished our week of learning the letter “O.” Students are really doing a great job with Show and Tell! Next week in Phonics we will be learning the letter “Gg” and its sound as in goat, golf, and good.

In Reading we will begin the story Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten. We will be discussing people in communities. Students will be learning letter recognition and how to classify and categorize. Please review your “Family Time” when it comes home on Monday for more details.

Anyone interested in helping with the Kindergarten Fall Festival is invited to a meeting in the NSE cafeteria at 2:00 on Wednesday, September 21st. The Fall Festival will be held on Thursday October 20th (no rain date.) The meeting MAY run until the end of the school day. Please send me a note or email if you would like to help but are unable to attend the meeting.

Please check your child’s folder daily and remove all “KEEP” items. It becomes difficult to handle the folders with too many papers inside (both for the students and teachers.)

Some students are having a very hard time cutting. Please save the coupons from the newspaper and have students practice cutting on the dotted line.

Please continue to have your child practice buttons!

The school store is now open. Kindergarten students may shop on a Monday morning before they come to homeroom. School store is optional but students may shop any Monday morning for the entire school year.

Next Friday students will attend a Pep Rally to celebrate homecoming!!! Please be sure to wear your red and blue and show your school spirit!

Next week in Art students will be painting. Please feel free to send in a spare T-Shirt for your child to cover up with during Art.

Monday will be Day 4 and we have Gym! Don’t forget your sneakers!
