Kindergarten News: November 21- December 2

Students will be dismissed at 11:45 on Wednesday, November 23rd!  School will be closed Thursday, November 24th until Monday, November 28th for Thanksgiving vacation!  We hope everyone has a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving!  Enjoy the time off with your child!  

 There will be NO HOMEWORK this week!  Enjoy!

Due to the short week, we will not begin a new letter in Phonics.  After Thanksgiving, we will learn the letter S as in smile, sun, and snake.  Word List 4 will come home on Wednesday, November 23rd and will be tested on Friday, December 2nd. In Reading, we will begin Unit 3, Watch Me Change, and read the story Little Panda.  This story will be finished the week after Thanksgiving.  We will discuss comparing and contrasting.  Students will also get a chance to watch a “Panda Cam” at the National Zoo in Washington DC.  In the upcoming weeks we will compare objects by weight, practice patterns, and start using geoboards in Math.  

Next week we will continue to talk about Thanksgiving and complete lots of fun activities!  On Monday we will make Native American necklaces and vests.  On Tuesday we will celebrate Thanksgiving with our 4th grade reading buddies!  Students will have a snack and watch the movie “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.”  Finally on Wednesday, we will make butter and cornbread!   
  
Thank you to everybody who sent in a non perishable item for the Feed A Friend Project.  The class was very excited about the idea of helping somebody in need. 
 
On Tuesday, November 29th, a letter to Santa will be coming home for you to complete with your child.  Please return this letter by Monday, December 5th.  On Friday, December 9th a postman will pick up the letters at school and take them directly to Santa at the North Pole!  

Family and Friends are invited to attend the Christmas Concert which will be held Monday, December 12th at 9:30 in the North Schuylkill High School Auditorium.  Kindergarteners have been practicing their songs and are very excited to share them with you!

Kindergarten News: November 14-18

Next week we will finish the unit “Animals Live Here” and read the story Whose Garden Is ItWe will be discussing gardens.  Students will learn about realism, fantasy and the vowel I.  Please be sure to review your Family Times when it comes home on Monday.  In Phonics will we will be studying the short vowel sound of “Ii” as in igloo, iguana, and ill.  Students continue to do a GREAT job on the word lists!  I can tell that they are practicing at home!  Please practice Phonics Word List3 next week and the beginning of the following week.  Due to the short week and the holiday, it will be tested Tuesday, November 22ndIn math, we will work with money.  Students will practice writing money amounts and also ordering amounts of money up to 10 cents.

Thanksgiving vacation begins on Wednesday November 23rd!!!  Students will be dismissed at 11:45 that day.  There is no school for students November 24th-28th.

The North Schuylkill Jr. Sr. Student Council is sponsoring the Feed A Friend project to help less fortunate families in Schuylkill County have an enjoyable Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.  In an effort to help those that are in need, I’m asking that each student bring in one non perishable item to donate to the Feed A Friend project. 

On Monday, we had our monthly Guidance Lesson.  This month we welcomed Mrs. Clarissa Geary into our classroom to talk about Personal Body Safety.  Please be sure to ask your child what they learned from Mrs. Geary.

If your child has not paid their $4 for the Halloween and Christmas party please do so as soon as possible!

We would like to thank all the parents who have been practicing buttoning and zipping jackets…  This is a HUGE help in the classroom!  THANK YOU!

Kindergarten News: November 7-11

Next week in Reading we will we continue our unit “Animals Live Here” and read the story “A Bed for the Winter.”  We will be discussing winter homes.  Students will learn about sequencing.  We will be adding 2 new sights words (he, for) so please be sure that your child’s sight word flash cards are in their folder or we’ll put them in the sleeve of their folder.  Please be sure to review your Family Times when it comes home on Monday.  There are LOTS of great activities for you to do with your child!  In Phonics we’ll learn about the letter Mm as in monkey, money, and movie!  Word List #2 is coming home today.  Please continue to practice the word lists at home!  We are very proud of how hard some of the students studied the first list! Students will continue to practice number identification and ordinal positions in Math.  We will also introduce time.  Students will practice telling time to the nearest hour.
Report cards are in your child’s folders today.  Please sign and return them as soon as possible!
Friday, November 11th is an Act 80 Day.  There is NO SCHOOL for students!

On Monday, November 7th we will be having our Guidance Lesson on Personal Body Safety with Mrs. Clarissa Geary. 
We were able to Skype with our computer teacher Miss Kraft in Africa again this week!  Please ask your child about this fun learning opportunity!  Miss Kraft just finished a safari when we talked to her so we got hear about all the animals that she saw!
Since the weather is getting cooler, please have your child practice putting their coats on themselves and zipping/ buttoning them.
Please remember that we change the clocks this weekend so shorts may NOT be worn to school starting Monday.  Thank you!
November book orders were sent home this week.  Please return them by Thursday November 10th.
