Kindergarten News: May 2-6

Next week in Reading we will finish Unit 5, Going Places. We will be reading the story This Is The Way We Go To School and discussing school transportation. Students will review the consonants y and q. We will also talk about drawing conclusions.

In Phonics we will be learning the sneaky e rule as in cake, rope, and cube. Just a reminder: I am NO LONGER sending home the word list prior to the test. I will be assessing students’on their ability to decode and blend the words using their phonics skills with no practice. 

In math we will learn a lot of new concepts. We will learn about a new 3 dimensional shape, the cone. Students will learn how to count by 2’s to 100. Another new concept that we’ll be discussing is even and odd numbers up to 10.

Kindergarten Graduation will be held at 6:30 on Monday, May 23rd in the High School Auditorium. Details will be sent home at a later date.

Our Field Trip will be on Thursday, May 26th. We will be attending the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus in Hershey at the Giant Center!

Kindergarten News: April 26-29, 2011

Next week in Readingwe will continue with Unit 5,Going Places. We will be reading the story On the Move!and discussing travel around the world. Students will review the consonants v and z. We will also talk about main idea.

In Phonics we will be learning about the digraph oo as in tooth and hook.A digraph is 2 letters that come together to make one sound. We code digraphs by underlining them.Just a reminder: I am NO LONGER sending home the word list prior to the test. I will be assessing students’on their ability to decode and blend the words using their phonics skills with no practice.

In math we will be measuring the capacity of containers using nonstandard units then ordering the containersby capacity. We will also practice writing numbers 0-30. Students will practice drawing pictures for“Some, Some More” stories.

Kindergarten students had a great time on Wednesday at Brainshow Mania! Thank you to PTO for bringing it to NSE!

Thank you to the parents who helped with the Easter party on Thursday! Each student got to find 3 eggs but they had to be sure they found an egg that our class’ sight word on it. The word for our class was “the.” It was an “eggcellent” day!!

There is no school Friday, April 22nd-Monday, April 25th. Enjoy the long weekend with your child.

Kindergarten News: April 18-21, 2011

Next week in Reading we will continue with Unit 5, Going Places. We will be reading the story The Little Engine That Could! and discussing how trains move. Students will review the vowel Uu and the story element plot.

In Phonics we will be learning about the digraph th as in thimble and feather . A digraph is 2 letters that come together to make one sound. We code digraphs by underlining them. I am EXTREMLY happy with how well the students did on Word List 19 last week. Just a reminder: I am NO LONGER sending home the word list prior to the test. I will be assessing students’ on their ability to decode and blend the words using their phonics skills with no practice.

In Math, we will be identifying and matching equivalent sets. We will also discuss doubles. Students will continue to act out “some, some more problems.”

Kindergarten News: April 11-15

Next week in Reading we will continue with Unit 5, Going Places. We will be reading the story Messenger! Messenger! and discussing different forms of emergency transportation. Students will review the vowel Uu. We will also discuss comparing and contrasting.

In Phonics we will be learning about the digraphs ck and sh like in duck and shark. A digraph is 2 letters that come together to make one new sound. We code digraphs by underlining them. I will no longer be sending home word lists. I will be assessing students’ on their ability to decode and blend the words using their phonics skills with no practice.

In math, we will continue working with Tangrams and money. Students will also learn about a new shape, a sphere. Please continue to practice identification of pennies, nickels, and dimes at home, a lot of students are struggling with this concept.

The menu for Monday April 11 2011 will be breaded chicken patty on a roll, not breaded chicken nuggets.

This afternoon we had a very special program. Our students raised $2000 for the SPCA and we presented them with a check. Students and staff were treated to a donut from the Plain and Fancy donut shop as a thank you. We also got to be part of a recording of a very special message to Ty Pennington and Extreme Home Makeover asking them to come and rebuild the animal shelter! Be sure to watch WNEP, WBRE, and the Pottsville Republican for coverage of the event!

Kindergarten physicals have been rescheduled. They will now be held on April 14th!

Kindergarten News: April 4-8

Next week in Reading we will continue with Unit 5, Going Places. We will be reading the story Mayday! Mayday! and discussing different forms of emergency transportation. Students will review the consonant X. We will also discuss cause and effect.

In Phonics we will be learning about long vowels.  The rule for long vowels is when a vowel is not followed by a consonant it is long (we code it with a macron).  I will no longer be sending home word lists. I will be assessing students’ on their ability to decode and blend the words using their phonics skills with no practice.

In math, we will be working with numbers. We will practice counting forward and backward, comparing smaller and larger numbers, and identifying numbers. Please remember that ALL students should be able to count to 100 by First grade! Please practice this skill if your child hasn’t mastered it yet!

We have been working on our Science unit, “Animals Two by Two.” Our investigation this week focused on another one of our class pets; snails.

We celebrated “Queen Day” on Wednesday and all the girls looked very beautiful! On Thursday, all the boys and girls pulled out their nicest clothes to attend the wedding of Q and U! It was a fabulous day in Kindergarten!

Kindergarten graduation pictures will be taken on Thursday, April 7th. ALL Students need to wear a white collar shirt!!!!! Please return order forms as soon as possible!

It’s hard to believe but Tuesday was the first day of the 4th marking period! Report cards are being sent home today. Please sign and return them as soon as possible!
