Kindergarten News: March 28- April 1

Next week in Reading we will begin Unit 5, Going Places. We will be reading the story Max Takes the Train and discussing different forms of transportation. Students will review the consonants J and W. We will also discuss realism and fantasy.

In Phonics we will be learning our last letter! We will learn about the consonant “Qq” and its sound as in queen, quilt, and quail. There will be no show and tell this week. On Wednesday, we will celebrate the day that the girls have been waiting for all year “Queen Day!” Girls are invited wear “queen dresses” and the boys wait on them all day (crowns will be provided for the queens.) On Friday, we will celebrate the marriage of Q and U. See your child’s folder for additional information.

In math, we will start learning about tangrams. Students will also practice measuring with nonstandard methods.

We have been working on our Science unit, “Animals Two by Two.” Our investigation this week focused on our newest class pets; pill bugs and sow bugs.

On Wednesday, we celebrated "Watery Wednesday" with lots of water experiments. We tried mixing things with water and testing what floats and sinks. It’s was a terrific day even though we had a 2 hour delay!

Kindergarten graduation pictures will be taken on Thursday, April 7th. ALL Students need to wear a white collar shirt!!!!!

We have completed testing for end of the 3rd marking period. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, April 1.

A BIG thank you to Ronny and his family for bringing oranges back from Florida for our class! We really enjoyed them :)

Reminder: The school store is open to Kindergarten students on Mondays!

Kindergarten Graduation will be held the evening of Monday, May 23rd in the High School Auditorium. Details will be sent home at a later date.

Our Field Trip will be on Thursday, May 26th. We will be attending the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus in Hershey at the Giant Center!

Kindergarten News: March 21-25, 2011

Next week in Reading we will finish Unit 4 Let’s Explore. We will be reading the story Abuela. We will discuss adventures in a city. Students will review the vowel Ee and the story element, setting.

In Phonics we will be learning about the consonant “Ww” as in wagon, west, and wacky. There will be no show and tell this week. We will have 2 fun activities next week for the letter W. We will have “Watery Wednesday” when we do lots of experiments and activities about water. We will also have “Wacky Hair Day” on Friday. Students are invited to wear their hair in a wacky way on Friday. Word List 17 will be tested Friday, March 25th.

In math, we will learn a new kind of pattern; ABBC. We will also continue to practice dividing by sharing, and comparing numbers. Some students are still having a hard time counting by 5’s so please be sure to practice at home.

We have been working on our Science unit, “Animals Two by Two.” Our investigation this week focused on our newest class pets; earthworms and red worms. Next week we will be studying snails!

Kindergarten graduation pictures will be taken on Thursday, April 7th. Students need to wear a white collar shirt!!!!! More information is in your child’s folder.

Kindergarten News: March 14-18

Next week in Reading we will continue Unit 4 Let’s Explore. We will be reading the story If You Could Go To Antarctica. We will discuss adventures in Antarctica. Students will review the vowel Ee and talk about classifying and categorizing.

In Phonics we will be learning about the consonant “Xx” as in fox, box, and ax. There will be no show and tell this week. Students will be going on a treasure hunt for the letter X! Word List 16 will be tested Friday, March 18th.

In math, we will continue to work with Nickels and paying for items up to $0.50. We will also be practicing ABC patterns, dividing by sharing, and comparing numbers. Some students are having a hard time counting by 5’s so please be sure to practice at home.

Today we began our last Science unit, “Animals Two by Two.” Our first investigation focused on our new class pets; goldfish and guppies. Next week we will be studying snails!

A big “thank you” to all the parents that read the newspaper with their children this week! “I’m A Reader” contracts need to be returned by Tuesday, March 15th. Congratulations to all of the Kindergarten students who found our ad in the paper! If anybody didn’t find the ad yet I will be collecting them until Monday.

Scholastic book orders are due March 14th! Don’t forget that each student got a coupon for a free book for Christmas. Please be sure to use them before the end of the year. There will be 2 more book orders before school is over.

Kindergarten News: March 7-11

Next week in Reading we will continue Unit 4 Let’s Explore. We will be reading the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will continue to discuss adventures. Students will review the consonant Gg and the literary element, character.

In Phonics we will be learning about the consonant “Jj” as in jar, jam, and jungle. Instead of show and tell each student will share a joke on Thursday. Please write the joke on a piece of paper so I can help them if they forget it. Word List 15 will be tested Friday, March 11th.

In math, we will continue to work on measuring. We will also be practicing ABC patterns and counting by 5’s.

Next week we will begin our last Science unit, “Animals Two by Two.” Our first investigation will focus on our new class pets; goldfish and guppies.

Next week is Newspaper in Education week and we will be doing several activities with the newspaper. “I’m A Reader” contracts are being sent home today and should be returned Monday, March 14th. Also be sure to watch the Pottsville Republican’s classified ads for a special ad!

Today we celebrated “Read Across America.” In the morning we had Bloomsburg University students visit our classroom and teach a lesson using the Dr. Seuss book “Ten Apples Up On Top.” Then we heard “Thidwick, The Big Hearted Moose” read by Miss Smith’s sister in New Jersey via Skype. Mrs. Kraft, a retired North Schuylkill Elementary teacher, came to visit and read another Dr. Seuss classic. Our reading buddies’ teacher, Mr. Glessner, and our local postman, Eric Hughes, read us “The Foot Book.” We finished off the day by hearing “Oh the Thinks You Can Think,” read by Miss T.’s sister. It was a “Seusstastic” day!
